Yesterday Konami released an awesome add-on for Metal Gear Solid 4 entitled "Metal Gear Solid 4 Database". Available for free download in Playstatioan Store the program is a comprehensive encyclopedia of all things Metal Gear. Is it worth getting?
Absolutely. Anyone with an interest in the Metal Gear franchise, whether longtime fan or newcomer, will find enjoyment with the database. The bulk of the program consists of articles on everything in the 20-year history of the Metal Gear franchise. People, places, weapons, events, everything is covered. Whenever an article mentions another term in the database that term is hyperlinked. It’s the same concept that Wikipedia uses and creates a nice interlocking interface.
In order to avoid leaking spoilers, the makers of the database cleverly put on a MGS4 lock feature. Upon opening the database the program scans your PS3 looking for MGS4 game data. If it finds a completed game then it unlocks all the MGS4 related articles. Likewise if a completed game save is not present then MGS4 data remains locked. The lock/unlock feature for MGS4 information also be toggled in the options menu.
Aside from the articles the program also sports other nice touches in the form of a timeline and relationship chart.
The Metal Gear Solid 4 Database is sure to please any MG fan and simultaneously serve as a great all tool for those looking to learn more about the complex MG universe.
I like the database, but it seems to contain retcons. This isn't necessarily bad, but for my purposes it makes things more difficult. It's almost like MGS cliff notes, right down to how its glossy, edited simplicity gives a different impression than does simply playing the games and paying attention.
